CTIA launches ratings system for mobile apps

A new ratings system unveiled by CTIA-The Wireless Association Nov. 29 will allow consumers to learn whether apps they purchase for smartphones and tablets are child friendly or for adults only. CTIA partnered with the Electronic Software Rating Board, the nonprofit body overseeing video game ratings, to administer the new system. Software developers fill out multiple choice questionnaires about the content of the apps they have designed and answers are used to assign an age-appropriateness rating, with the ESRB periodically reviewing apps to see if they fit the rating.
